Interim govt will prioritise country's stability and democratic process, he says

Sarjis Alam, chief organiser (North) of National Citizen Party (NCP), today said there is no scope to advance or delay the national election for any individual or group.

"No individual or group has the opportunity to advance or delay an election for their own benefit. The interim government will prioritise country's stability and the democratic process over individuals, groups, or political parties," he said.

Sarjis made the remarks at the Thakurgaon district Freedom Fighters' Complex this afternoon while responding to queries from journalists after an introductory meeting of the party's newly announced district committee.

He also said the interim government and the Election Commission have repeatedly stated that the national election will be held in the first half of February.

"NCP does not disagree with this [election timeframe]. We see no scope for doubt. Holding the election within this timeframe will benefit everyone, as preparations are underway," he added.

The NCP leader further said the usual two-party electoral equation will not hold in the upcoming election. "A third strong political force is likely to influence which of the two major parties will form the next government," he said.

"We have formed a political alliance named Democratic Reform Alliance. We expect several more political parties to join the alliance within a day or two. We will contest the national election under a single electoral symbol and represent the people in the next parliament," he added.

Sarjis said voters are not likely to support the same old parties, symbols, or candidates this time.

Commenting on religion-based parties, he said if any faith-based political party tries to impose its ideology on all citizens, people will turn away from them.

NCP joint chief coordinator agriculturist Golam Mortuza, Thakurgaon district NCP convener Md Rafiqul Alam, among others, were present at the programme.
