Bangladesh Women began their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier campaign with an impressive 21-run victory over the United States at the Mulpani Cricket Ground in Nepal on Saturday.
After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, skipper Nigar Sultana Joty’s side produced a disciplined batting display to post a competitive 158 for five in their allotted 20 overs. Promoted to No. 3, Sharmin Akhter played a key role in anchoring the innings, scoring a classy 63 off 39 balls. Her knock, marked by composure and timely boundaries, laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s strong total.
The innings was further supported by Sobhana Mostary, who contributed a steady 32 off 29 deliveries, while Shorna Akter provided late impetus with an unbeaten 16 from 12 balls. The openers also ensured a positive start, as Dilara Akter struck 17 off just eight balls and Juairiya Ferdous added 17 from 23 balls. For the USA, Maahi Madhavan stood out with the ball, claiming three wickets, while Isani Vaghela picked up two.
In reply, the United States made a promising start through a 42-run opening stand between Disha Dhingra and Chetna Pagydyala. Dhingra scored 23 and Pagydyala 36, but once the pair was dismissed, Bangladesh tightened their grip on the match. Ritu Singh attempted a late fightback with a rapid 33 off 13 balls, but the mounting required run rate proved too steep.
Bangladesh’s bowlers shared the spoils effectively, with Nahida Akter leading the attack with four wickets, Ritu Moni taking three, and Rabeya Khan adding two. The USA eventually finished on 137 for nine, sealing a confident opening win for Bangladesh.
