Hollywood actor Robert De Niro has strongly criticised US President Donald Trump. He called Trump “the enemy of this country” and urged Americans to resist his administration. He also broke into tears during the interview.
De Niro made the remarks on MSNBC’s “The Best People with Nicolle Wallace” podcast. He said, “Trump is the enemy of this country, let’s not kid ourselves. It’s that simple. Everybody has to stick together to get them out and get back on track.”
During the interview, the host brought up De Niro’s 1981 Academy Award acceptance speech. He had thanked everyone around him in that speech. When asked why he always tried to lift people up, the actor became emotional and struggled to hold back his tears.
“You have to lift people up. You have to bring them together. Period. You can’t divide people. You can’t win that way,” he said.
De Niro also warned that Trump’s movement would not simply go away. “People have to resist, resist, resist, resist, resist. That’s the only way. Parts of that movement are still there, and that’s the scary part. It has to be neutralised by the people,” he added.

De Niro has been a vocal critic of Trump since his first term from 2017 to 2021. In May 2024, the National Association of Broadcasters revoked a leadership award planned for De Niro. This happened after he spoke out against Trump outside the courthouse where Trump’s hush money trial was taking place.
De Niro is one of the most celebrated actors in Hollywood history. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for The Godfather Part II (1974) and Best Actor for Raging Bull (1980). He was last seen in the action thriller Tin Soldier (2025).
