Police arrested a man in Faridpur on Tuesday afternoon for allegedly killing his wife, Barna Khanam, 28, following a family dispute in Gopalganj’s Kashiani upazila and attempting to conceal her body.
The arrestee, Al Amin Bepari, 37, was picked up from the Kotwali Police Station area. He was later produced before a court, where he gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
According to police, Al Amin married Barna about 14 years ago. Family members alleged that Al Amin frequently abused and physically tortured his wife over family disputes.
On July 4, Barna visited her parents’ home with her husband and children. Around 11:30am on July 6, Al Amin allegedly took her to a pond behind the house, where he killed her and left her body by the water before fleeing.
Police said the victim's son Israfil notified family members after becoming suspicious of his father. Barna’s body was then found at the spot with a scarf wrapped around her neck. Police later recovered the body, prepared an inquest report, and sent it to Gopalganj 250-bed General Hospital for autopsy.
The victim’s mother, Bailey Begum, filed a murder case with Kashiani Police Station that night.
Confirming the incident, Kashiani Police Station OC Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman said, “The main accused, Al Amin, was arrested from Faridpur’s Kotwali Police Station area within 12 hours of the case being filed. When he was sent to the court today, he gave a statement.”
