The Appellate Division on Tuesday stayed a High Court order that had granted bail to the former minister and Awami League joint general secretary Dr Dipu Moni in two cases.

Chamber judge, Justice Md Rezaul Haque passed the order after hearing a government appeal challenging the High Court decision to grant her bail.

Dipu Moni’s lawyer, Ramzan Ali Sikdar, said that she is currently facing 38 cases, including two cases before the International Crimes Tribunal.

He said that the High Court had granted her bail in two cases after issuing rules, while it had also issued rules on her bail petitions in 13 other cases.

Dipu Moni, who served as a joint general secretary of the Awami League, activities of which remain suspended, served as foreign minister, education minister and social welfare minister during the party’s 15-year authoritarian rule.

The police arrested her from the Baridhara area in Dhaka on the night of August 19, 2024 following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 amid a student-led mass uprising.

She is accused in more than 38 cases involving murder, crimes against humanity, corruption and alleged incitement to violence.
