Former Awami League lawmaker from women’s reserved-seats, Umme Fatema Nazma Begum, also known as Sheuly Azad, has been released from jail on bail in a murder case.

She walked out of Brahmanbaria District Jail on the night of July 21, though the matter only came to light on Thursday.

Brahmanbaria District Jail Superintendent Md Mujibur Rahman Majumder confirmed the development to The Daily Star, saying that Umme Fatema was released on Tuesday night following a court order granting her bail.

Umme Fatema serves as the general secretary of Sarail upazila Awami League, whose activities remain banned, and is also a member of the Brahmanbaria district unit of the party.

She was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of police from her home in Dhaka's Niketan on October 6, 2024, and was later shown arrested in a murder case filed with Sarail Police Station.

According to Sarail Police Station, the murder case was filed on September 3, 2024, naming 67 Awami League leaders and activists, including former housing and public works minister RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury. Umme Fatema is the fourth accused in the case.
