Two activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League were arrested in Moulvibazar on Monday after staging a protest procession in the district town.

The demonstrators were demanding the withdrawal of the ban imposed on their organisation, as well as on the political activities of the Bangladesh Awami League.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Ferdausur Rahman Bappi, 30, and Armanur Rahman, 20, the police said.

Local residents reported that a group of BCL activists brought out a flash procession early in the morning from the town's Chowmuhani Point, concluding it after marching to Shamshernagar Road.

Led by local BCL leader Shoaib Ahmed, the marchers chanted slogans in support of their demands and moved through the area under the organisation’s banner, residents added.

Moulvibazar sadar police station officer-in-charge Md Saiful Islam confirmed the arrests of the two BCL activists.

He told New Age that the police rushed to the spot immediately upon receiving information about the illegal procession and detained the two individuals following a brief chase.

‘Further legal proceedings, including the filing of a case in this regard, are currently underway,’ the police officer said on Monday afternoon.
