A woman has been accused of attempting to kill her sleeping husband by slitting his throat following a domestic dispute in Babupura area of Lalmonirhat.

The incident occurred earlier this morning; the accused has been detained and is in police custody, Lalmonirhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saad Ahmed said.

According to police and family members, the husband, Hridoy Islam, 26, was asleep in his room when his wife, Jannatul Ferdous, 19, allegedly attacked him with a sharp knife. Hearing his screams, family members and neighbours rushed to the spot and rescued him in a bloodied condition.

“The injured youth has deep wounds in his throat. His condition is extremely critical as the windpipe has been damaged. He has been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment,” Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital Resident Medical Officer Dr Karim Badsha said.

Soon after the incident, angry locals held Jannatul. Police later reached the scene and took her into custody.

“We were in the next room. Suddenly hearing Hridoy’s screams, we rushed there and saw him holding his blood-soaked throat, while Jannatul was standing beside him with a knife in her hand,” said victim’s father, Ershad Ali.

He said Hridoy and Jannatul had frequent arguments.

Police said legal action will be taken once a complaint is received; however, no written complaint has yet been filed by the victim’s family.
