It is encouraging to see several high level Mexican officials expressing their commitment to expanding political, economic, environmental, and investment cooperation with Bangladesh.
Bangladesh and Mexico share a promising horizon for expanding their bilateral trade and cultural relations. The relationship, established in 1975, has steadily grown, but there is ample reason to believe that it can be taken to the next level.
Recent efforts have focused on diversifying trade beyond traditional items. To that end, Mexico’s intent to include pharmaceuticals and information technology products alongside Bangladesh’s textile exports signals untapped potential awaiting robust partnerships.
There is also reason to believe that the two nations can expand in more than just trade; despite geographical distance and differences, Bangladesh and Mexico share deep cultural affinities rooted in their histories and vibrant traditions, especially around the notion of food, family, and music.
These similarities are what both nations can tap into to create fertile ground for enriching cultural exchanges - these exchanges can deepen people-to-people connections and mutual understanding, and is the next logical step to reinforcing bilateral cooperation beyond economics.
It is important for the nations to understand that this will not happen without proactively seeking to broaden their collaboration, be that through regular high-level dialogues, joint ventures, or business delegation exchanges.
As Bangladesh looks to continue on its path to develop meaningfully as a nation, its diplomatic efforts will only increase in importance. To that end, collaborating with Mexico, given the potential there exists here, should certainly be considered with more seriousness.
