A man was killed after being struck by a speeding pickup truck in the capital's Ramna area this afternoon.

The deceased is Md Rezaul Kibria, police said without providing further details.

Rezaul was hit by the vehicle near the Officers' Club around 1:00pm, according to police and family sources.

Following the incident, the victim's daughter, Tanzin Kibria Labanya, filed a case with Ramna Model Police Station naming the pickup driver, Md Sohel Rana, 27, as the accused.

According to the case statement, Rezaul had visited Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital earlier that day for his wife's treatment. Whilst returning home in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, he alighted near the Officers' Club intersection to speak with on-duty traffic police.

At that moment, a pickup truck travelling towards Moghbazar from the Kakrail Church direction struck him at high speed, hurling him onto the road and inflicting critical injuries.

Local witnesses and passersby rescued Rezaul and rushed him back to the emergency department of Holy Family Hospital. As his condition rapidly deteriorated, he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where doctors declared him dead at approximately 4:01pm.

When contacted, Mohammad Rahat Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramna Model Police Station, said police detained the driver and seized the vehicle at the scene.

"The driver has been shown arrested in the case and was sent to court this morning," the OC added.
