The Supreme Court today upheld High Court orders granting bail to detained former minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan in three separate criminal cases.
Justice Md Rezaul Haque, chamber judge of the Appellate Division, passed “no order” on three separate petitions filed by the state challenging the High Court’s bail orders.
Senior lawyers SM Shahjahan, Md Motaher Hossain Sazu, SM Abul Hossain and Azhar Ullah Bhuiyan appeared for Sujan during the hearing. Deputy Attorney General Syeda Shajia Sharmin represented the state.
Sujan’s legal team said it remains uncertain whether he will be released from custody, as law enforcement authorities are reportedly attempting to show him arrested in a fresh case.
Md Motaher Hossain Sazu told The Daily Star that the procedural developments could delay or complicate his client’s release from jail despite the apex court’s chamber judge order.
On May 6, the High Court granted bail to Sujan, who was arrested on September 16, 2024, in connection with the three cases.
The cases were filed with Jatrabari Police Station in Dhaka and in Panchagarh -- all on murder charges -- following the political changeover on August 5, 2024.
