At least 32 research papers involving 18 faculty members and four students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have been retracted by leading international publishers over allegations including manipulated peer review, data inconsistencies, citation irregularities and suspected paper mill activity, raising concern over the university's research integrity and academic oversight.
The retractions were identified through records published by Retraction Watch, a global database that tracks withdrawn scientific publications.
The papers are part of at least 325 retracted research articles linked to Bangladeshi universities and research institutions between 2019 and June 2026.
Analysis of the database shows that the 32 retracted papers involve 18 teachers and four students from nearly 11 academic departments and one institute of the university. The papers were withdrawn by internationally renowned publishers and journals, including Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, PLOS ONE and IEEE.
Among the academics, Professor Dr Md Mostafizur Rahman of the Department of Environmental Sciences is linked to the highest number of retractions, with 10 papers withdrawn. Professor Dr Md Kabir Uddin of the same department was associated with two retracted publications.
In the Department of Mathematics, Professor Dr Md Ashraful Alam had three papers retracted, while Assistant Professor Shahidul Islam had two. A jointly authored paper by Professor Dr Abeda Sultana and Professor Mrityunjoy Kumar Pandit was also withdrawn from the Journal of Intelligent & Fuzzy Systems.
In the Department of Public Health and Informatics, Associate Professor Dr Md Sakhawat Hossain was linked to two retracted papers, while Professor Dr Mahfuza Mobarak and Professor Dr Md Tajuddin Sikder each had one publication withdrawn.
The list also includes Professor Dr Abdullah Mohammad Sohel and Assistant Professor Nafisa Nowal Islam of the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Professor Dr Md Mushfiq Anwar of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Professor Dr A A Mamun and Professor Dr Md Shafiqul Islam of the Department of Physics, Professor Dr Md Enamul Haque of the Department of Chemistry, Professor Dr Md Moyazzem Hossain of the Department of Statistics and Data Science, Professor Dr Mohammad Shawkat Hossain of the Department of Finance and Banking, and Professor Dr K M Zahidul Islam of the Institute of Business Administration.
