President Mohammed Shahabuddin may resign shortly citing physical illness as the reason, responsible sources have indicated. According to sources within the government and the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), a message has already been conveyed from the BNP's high command to President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who was elected during the Awami League administration, requesting him to step down. Simultaneously, high-level discussions are underway regarding his potential successor.
Discussions are also taking place within the BNP's high command regarding the election of the next president. The name of a senior secretary currently serving on a contractual basis in an important government post has suddenly emerged in discussions as a potential successor. Previously, however, the names of senior BNP leaders, including Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain and Abdul Moyeen Khan, were under consideration for the role. If Mohammed Shahabuddin resigns, the national parliament Speaker will temporarily assume the duties of the President in accordance with the Constitution. Subsequently, a new president will be elected by members of parliament within the prescribed timeframe.
Jamaat-e-Islami has informed the Election Commission (EC) about the expulsion of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party. In a letter to the chief election commissioner today, Jamaat said the decision was made at an urgent meeting of the party's central executive council held with Opposition Leader and the party's Ameer Shafiqur Rahman in chair. Gazi Nazrul has been expelled under Article 62 of Jamaat's constitution after an investigation found evidence of "moral misconduct", said the letter.
The letter, signed by Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar, also asked the EC to take necessary action against Gazi Nazrul. EC officials this afternoon confirmed receiving Jamaat's letter. A copy of the letter was also sent to the parliament speaker. Jamaat expelled Gazi Nazrul after video clips involving the MP and a young woman -- one showing them in an intimate setting -- circulated on social media since Monday night, sparking nationwide reactions.
The government has retired 17 senior police officers from public service, including three officers holding the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). The decision was announced in a gazette notification issued today, Thursday, by the Police-1 Branch of the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The notification, signed by Senior Secretary Monzur Morshed Chowdhury, states that the officers have been retired in the public interest under Section 45 of the Government Service Act, 2018.
Those retired include three DIGs, 12 additional DIGs and two officers holding the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP). According to the notification, the retired officers include Highway Police DIG Mohammad Abdullahil Baki, Bangladesh Police Academy (Sardah) DIG Md Walid Hossain, and CID DIG Sana Shaminur Rahman. The notification states that the retired officers will receive retirement benefits in accordance with the applicable rules. It also says that the order, issued in the public interest, takes immediate effect.
The results of the written test of the 50th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examination were published on Thursday, with 6,165 candidates qualifying for the next stage. The results published by the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) in the afternoon are available on its official website. According to a PSC notice, the written test of the 50th BCS was held from April 9 to May 7 in Dhaka and seven other divisional cities.
Earlier, the preliminary exam was held on January 30, while the results were published on February 10 when 12,385 candidates qualified for the written stage. According to the PSC calendar, viva voce are scheduled to begin on August 10. The 50th BCS will recruit a total of 2,150 candidates, including both cadre and non-cadre positions. Of these, 1,755 are cadre posts. The Health Cadre will receive the largest number of recruits, with 650 positions, followed by 200 positions in the Administration Cadre and 117 positions in the Police Cadre.
