Adani Power’s Godda plant in India has reduced electricity supply to Bangladesh due to disruptions in coal transportation by rail.
Heavy rail congestion and transport restrictions have led to less coal reaching the plant, resulting in lower electricity generation from the plant.
The power plant expects to normalise the situation shortly and is now temporarily adjusting production to increase generation during daytime.
India's Adani power plant has clarified on Sunday the reason for the recent reduced electricity supply in Bangladesh, which worsened the country’s overall electricity output recently and led to load-shedding of over 3,000 megawatt (MW).
“Due to severe railway congestion and multiple loading restrictions currently imposed on the transportation network, the movement of railway rakes till our Godda Plant is impacted. As a result, the plant is receiving lower-than-normal coal supplies and is temporarily forced to optimise production,” Adani Power Jharkhand Ltd (APJL) said in an official statement.
“Consequently, the plant has moderated power dispatch during off-peak daytime hours to ensure adequate availability during the evening peak demand period,” it said.
“We have kept the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) informed of the situation and are working closely with Indian Railways to facilitate early restoration of normal rake availability,” the APJL statement said.
“We expect the situation to normalise shortly. In the interim, the Company is taking all possible measures to maximise coal deliveries to the plant and minimise any impact on power supply,” the statement concluded.
Sources say that other coal-based plants in eastern and central India are facing similar shortages due to heavy rains, making this a sector-wide issue.
Electricity supply from India’s Adani power plant fell below 900 MW recently from around 1200 MW last month.
