BNP has served a show-cause notice on Fakhruddin Ahmed Bacchu, lawmaker for Mymensingh-11, over his alleged involvement with unethical activities.

The notice, signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, was issued on Saturday, stipulating a 48-hour timeframe to reply.

It stated that allegations have surfaced that Bacchu was involved with “unethical activities” that breached party discipline.

The notice also reminded the MP that he was expelled from the party once before in September 2024 over similar allegations. His expulsion was later withdrawn in October 2025, and he was given the party ticket to contest the 13th national election in February.

Meanwhile, Bacchu yesterday claimed the allegations were part of a smear campaign. “My political rivals are spreading propaganda to tarnish both my social and political image,” he told this newspaper.

Bacchu, also convener of the Bhaluka upazila BNP, demanded an impartial investigation into the allegations against him.

According to party sources and locals, Bacchu and his associates have established control over the jhut (garment scraps) trading in the area. Previously, it was controlled by Morshed Alam, a rebel candidate in the last general election and former convener of the upazila unit BNP.

Tensions have escalated in Bhaluka’s industrial belt, with clashes, lawsuits and incidents of gunfire reportedly taking place over control of the jhut trade between the two groups over the last few months.

The issue drew the attention of BNP higher-ups following some recent incidents of obstructing jhut sales at some big factories in the area.

The latest incident took place on July 9 when Bacchu’s men allegedly hijacked a vehicle from a garment factory.

According to a police complaint filed by Md Sarwar Hossain, deputy general manager (admin) of Envoy Textiles Ltd, a group of miscreants hijacked a truck from in front of the factory’s main gate in Jamirdia around noon on July 9.

The company recovered the truck later in the same day with police assistance.

The deputy general manager filed the written complaint to the superintendent of Mymensingh Industrial Police on July 11.

The complaint alleged the factory authorities were threatened publicly to prevent the removal of waste materials from the factory and faced obstacles in bringing in vehicles carrying construction materials onto the premises.

Superintendent of Police of Mymensingh Industrial Police-5 Md Ansar Uddin confirmed receiving the complaint and said legal action would be taken upon investigation.

According to local sources, Bacchu’s men were behind the hijacking.

Bacchu, however, denied the allegation and said none of his followers were involved with any such activities.

Rather, he claimed that the incident of hijacking the truck was a result of a dispute between two owners of the vehicle.

Contacted, BNP Joint Secretary Syed Emran Saleh Prince said the party was following a “zero tolerance” policy against crime and that strict action would be taken against anyone facing allegations after investigation.
