The Ganosamhati Andolan has urged the authorities to halt plans to construct a road through an elephant corridor in the reserved Garjan forest at Madhushia in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The party made the demand in a press statement issued on Wednesday by its acting chief coordinator Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu and executive coordinator Abul Hasan Rubel.
If the road is constructed through the reserved forest, elephant movement will be disrupted, human-elephant conflict will increase and the forest’s ecological balance will be affected, the statement said.
The leaders urged the authorities to redesign the project and construct the road without encroaching on the reserved forest.
