A 24-year-old Bangladeshi expatriate working in Saudi Arabia was allegedly beaten to death by his wife and her family members in Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj upazila, according to a case filed by the victim’s family.
Police recovered the body of the deceased, Md Saim, and sent it to Brahmanbaria General Hospital for an autopsy.
In the case statement, deceased's brother, Md Mehedi Hasan, said Saim married Fawzia Akter, daughter of neighbour and relative Abdul Ahad, around three years ago. The couple had reportedly been experiencing domestic disputes since their marriage.
According to the complaint filed on June 17, Saim returned from Saudi Arabia about 15 days ago after developing chest pain and seeking medical treatment. Meanwhile, amid the ongoing marital conflict, his wife filed a dowry-related torture case against him, and a court later issued an arrest warrant.
The complaint alleges that on Monday night, after learning that police were coming to execute the arrest warrant, Saim tried to flee. At that point, his wife and several of her relatives allegedly chased him to a roadside ditch beside a crop field, assaulted him, and fatally injured him by breaking his neck before leaving the scene.
Police later recovered his mud-covered body from the area.
Abu Hena Md Mostafa Reza, investigation officer and acting officer-in-charge of Ashuganj Police Station, said a murder case has been filed against five people, including Saim's wife.
Two accused, listed as the first and second defendants in the case, have been arrested and sent to jail through a court, he added.
