The prime minister’s information adviser, Zahed ur Rahman, said on Tuesday that recent push-in incidents along the Bangladesh-India border were not intended by the Indian government to put pressure on Bangladesh.
Speaking at a press conference at the Press Information Department in the Bangladesh Secretariat, he said that India was making sincere efforts to improve relations with Bangladesh and that the incidents appeared to be linked to political developments in the Indian state of West Bengal, rather than any deliberate attempt to strain bilateral ties.
'The government currently in power in West Bengal came to office with certain electoral commitments. The push-in incidents appear to be one of the outcomes of efforts to fulfil those promises,' he said.
He expressed hope that the issue would be resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding.
According to the adviser, the matter was largely connected to West Bengal’s domestic political dynamics and was not aimed at creating tension between Bangladesh and India.
'It was an issue during the election in West Bengal. It is essentially an internal political matter there, although some of its effects are being felt by us,' he said.
Zahed ur Rahman stated that he did not believe the Indian government was pursuing any policy to damage relations with Bangladesh or place the country under pressure.
He noted that the newly elected government in West Bengal was taking steps in line with its electoral pledges and that the push-in incidents should be viewed in that context.
The adviser also mentioned that discussions at various levels between the two countries indicated that India wanted to move beyond the difficulties that had emerged in bilateral relations following the political changes in Bangladesh after August 5.
'From our interactions, it appears that India wants to move forward from the situation that existed after August 5 and strengthen relations with Bangladesh,' he said.
He added that the current situation appeared to be a temporary challenge and should not be interpreted as a deliberate effort by India to undermine bilateral relations.
