The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance has announced a rally in Dhaka tomorrow, coinciding with the founding anniversary of the Awami League, whose activities remain banned.
The alliance said the rally would demand trials over all "enforced disappearances, killings and massacres committed by the fascist Awami League."
The rally will be held at Bijoynagar at 5:00pm, with Jamaat Ameer and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman scheduled to attend as the chief guest.
The alliance also announced nationwide protest rallies and processions in all districts on July 4 with the same demand.
The programmes were announced at a press briefing held at Jamaat's central office in Dhaka's Moghbazar this morning.
Speaking at the briefing, the alliance's liaison committee coordinator and Jamaat Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad said the programmes were also meant to protest the conspiracies against the country, repression of opposition parties, rising commodity prices and the deterioration of law and order.
Azad described June 23 as a "painful day" in Bangladesh's political history. He alleged that during the previous 17 years, the country's independence, sovereignty and people's rights had repeatedly been compromised to keep the former government in power.
He also alleged that attempts were underway to rehabilitate "fascism" despite the 2024 mass uprising.
On the border situation, Azad alleged that killings, abductions and the detention of Bangladeshi farmers had continued without an effective response from the government.
He further said that justice remained elusive over a series of incidents, including the 2009 Pilkhana tragedy, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and the July-August [2024] mass killings. According to him, although the interim government had accelerated the judicial process, its pace had slowed after the current government assumed office.
Azad said the alliance's top leaders decided at a meeting last night to intensify their movement demanding justice for the July-August killings.
He also said the alliance had drafted a 36-day programme marking the second anniversary of the July Uprising, which would be finalised and announced after the alliance's next meeting on June 25.
Representatives of the alliance's constituent parties, including National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Bangladesh Nezame Islam Party, Bangladesh Labour Party, Jatiya Ganotantrik Party (Jagpa), Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party and Bangladesh Development Party, attended the briefing.
