The president of Bangladesh takes a 51-word oath before assuming office, but unlike the prime minister and cabinet members, does not have to take an oath of secrecy.

The president’s oath is set out in the Third Schedule of the Constitution of Bangladesh. It must be taken before the president enters upon the duties of the office.

The oath reads --

“I, ..................., do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of President of Bangladesh according to law:

“That I will bear true faith and allegiance to Bangladesh:

“That I will preserve, protect and defend the Constitution:

“And that I will do right to all manner of people according to law, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will.”

Once these words are recited, the president’s oath is complete.

Third Schedule also sets out the oaths for other constitutional office-holders, including the prime minister, ministers, ministers of state and deputy ministers.

However, only the prime minister and cabinet members are required to take an oath of secrecy in addition to their oath of office.

Several former and current Cabinet Division officials said there is no provision for a separate oath of secrecy for the president because the presidency is a ceremonial post.

“The president does not hold executive responsibilities involving state liability,” the officials concerned said.

They said provisions for an oath of secrecy are meant for those who can be held constitutionally accountable for executing, or failing to execute, duties in the governance of the state.
