Police say suspects cut power to a Rangpur family’s home after killing four members, fearing CCTV cameras could expose them.

Sanatan Chakraborty, assistant commissioner of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police’s Detective Branch (DB) and investigating officer, said on Tuesday that Siddhartha Das severed the electricity connection after the murders.

 “Even after killing the four people, Siddhartha feared traces of their presence might remain inside the house. Suspecting there could be CCTV cameras, he cut the electricity after the murders. While cutting the electric meter wires, a short circuit occurred, disconnecting power to the entire house.”

Police recovered the bodies of former Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their Class 5 student son Priyam Chakraborty and postgraduate student daughter Agami Chakraborty from a house in the city’s Machhuapara on Saturday night.

Police arrested Mugdha Das, 23, and Siddhartha Das, 19, early Sunday. Both live near the victims’ home and are relatives. They gave statements under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a court that afternoon.

The DB said the information emerged during their interrogation.

 “Although they concealed some information from police, both suspects gave detailed accounts of the entire incident in court,” Sanatan said.

Asked about questions surrounding the arrests and police statements, he said: “The arrests of Siddhartha and Mugdha were made based on specific information with the help of local residents. There are attempts to spread different misleading pieces of information about the murders. However, police are trying to uncover the truth through investigation.”

 “Police are proceeding in the right direction. We hope to submit the chargesheet to the court as soon as possible.”
