Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawmaker from Mymensingh-7 Md Mahbubur Rahman on Thursday said that the possibility of the Awami League returning to politics in the country within the next 50 years was highly unlikely.
He made the remarks while participating in the general discussion on the proposed budget for the financial year 2026–27 during the 15th sitting of the second session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
The lawmaker said that the Awami League had injured three generations of people, school students, college students and university students, through events linked to the road safety movement, the quota reform movement and the movement that eventually led to the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024.
‘As long as these three generations remain alive over the next 50 years, the possibility of the Awami League returning is, I believe, very slim,’ he said.
Mahbubur Rahman also called for unity among political forces that had participated in the anti-fascist movement.
‘I would urge those now in the opposition, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party, to remain united. They stood with us during the movement, and I believe they will continue to stand with us in the future,’ he said.
