A theft took place at the Super Specialised Hospital at Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) on Monday night.
A group allegedly took away leftover construction equipment and materials from the hospital’s basement using pickup vans, hospital sources said today.
However, no medical equipment was stolen, hospital Director Prof Saifullah Munshi told The Daily Star.
He said some construction equipment and materials had remained in the basement long after the hospital’s completion. Those items were taken last night, he said, adding that Ansar personnel deployed at the hospital tried to stop them but failed.
He said a general diary has been filed with Shahbagh Police Station, and a committee has been formed to investigate the matter.
Police advised them to file a case after submitting the probe report, he added.
A BMU official said a Korean company had constructed the building and left some equipment there. The company had written to the hospital authorities a few months ago to collect the materials, but the matter remained unresolved due to the prevailing situation in the country.
Another BMU official said there is confusion regarding whether it was a case of theft or something else.
Mazharul Islam, assistant commissioner (Ramna Zone) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said a general diary has been filed with Shahbagh Police Station, and police are looking into the matter.
