The police have submitted a final report stating that Swarnamoyee Biswas, a graphic designer at online news portal Dhaka Stream, died by suicide due to family disputes, neglect by relatives, and prolonged mental distress.
Swarnamoyee Biswas, 28, was found hanging in her room in Dhaka on October 18, 2025. A cut mark was also found in the left hand.
An unnatural death case was filed with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on October 19, 2025.
Police submitted the final report to a metropolitan magistrate court in Dhaka on April 14, and the court accepted it on April 19, court officials said.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station sub-inspector Md Saiful Islam, also the investigation officer of the case, said that after reviewing witness statements, evidence, the inquest report, viscera and DNA reports, autopsy findings, and a notebook recovered during the investigation, police concluded that it was a case of suicide.
Following Swarnamoyee’s death, allegations raised on social media that the portal’s the then Bangla department editor Altaf Shahnewaz had instigated her suicide.
Protests were held demanding justice amid widespread allegations of sexual harassment and incitement to suicide.
Dhaka Stream issued a condolence message on October 19, 2025, stating that it had received a complaint against Altaf on July 13 and he was was withdrawn from newsroom duties.
Altaf told New Age that the Dhaka Stream editor had asked him to resign following Swarnamoyee Biswas’s death and that he complied.
Denying the allegations, Dhaka Stream editor and publisher Golam Iftekhar Mahmud said that Altaf had resigned on his own.
