National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam on Thursday alleged that the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party had betrayed the spirit of the July Uprising as BNP lawmakers did not take oath as members of the constitution reform council.

The NCP convener made the allegation at a press conference at the party’s central office in the capital’s Bangla Motor area.

He said that the BNP had failed to show due respect to the July Uprising by refraining from taking the oath on the constitution reform issue.

‘Through this, the BNP has betrayed the martyrs of the July Uprising and also the spirit of forming a discrimination-free democratic Bangladesh,’ Nahid alleged.

The NCP is a partner of the Jamaat-led alliance.

Referring to the February 12 Jatiya Sangsad elections, Nahid said that voting was held in a free, fair and credible manner, where voters were able to cast their ballots in favour of their preferred candidates.

‘However, manipulation took place in publishing the voting results, and some selected candidates of the Jamaat-led alliance were intentionally shown as defeated,’ he said.

He called on the Election Commission to take immediate steps to address the alliance’s allegations regarding the results in 30 constituencies.

NCP central leaders Ariful Islam, Monira Sharmin, Mahbub Alam and Toriqul Islam, among others, also attended the press conference.

The Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime was ousted from power on August 5, 2024, amid a student-led mass uprising.
