Drug dealers allegedly snatched a warrant-listed accused in handcuffs from police during an anti-drug operation at Tongi Railway Station in Gazipur last night.

A police constable was injured when the attackers allegedly hurled stones at the police team during the incident.

Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Maksudul Alam told The Daily Star around 9:00am today that a police team led by Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman conducted a raid in the Keranir Tek slum area around 11:00pm yesterday following a tip-off.

During the operation, police arrested Rahul, who was wanted in a case, the OC said.

While police were taking Rahul through Tongi Railway Station, several suspected drug dealers allegedly attacked them. They picked up stones from the railway tracks and hurled them at the police, injuring Constable Masud, who later received first aid at a hospital.

Taking advantage of the situation, the attackers allegedly snatched Rahul from the police, the police official said.

Additional police rushed to the station after being informed of the incident and cordoned off the area. The handcuffs were later recovered abandoned at the station.

Police subsequently launched a manhunt to recapture Rahul.

“As of 10:00am, Rahul had not been arrested. The operation to recapture him is still underway,” the OC said.
