The body of a staff member of the High Court was found at the Bijoy 71 building of the Supreme Court in Dhaka this afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Kamal Uddin, a court assistant -- locally known as a jamadar -- attached to Justice Syed Enayet Hossain of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, Md Mazharul Haque, special officer of the Supreme Court, told The Daily Star.

According to preliminary information, Kamal's body was found hanging from a rope tied to a window inside the building.

A security official at the building reportedly alerted the authorities after noticing the incident, he added.

Members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) visited the scene and carried out necessary forensic and crime scene procedures. Police from Shahbagh Police Station later arrived and began an investigation.

The body was subsequently sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

Mazharul said it was too early to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death.

"Whether it was a suicide or whether there were other factors involved can only be determined after a proper investigation and the post-mortem," he said.

He also said an unnatural death case would be filed as part of the initial legal process. Further action, if necessary, would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

Kamal Uddin was from Chapainawabganj. Details regarding his age and family members could not be immediately confirmed.

The investigation was underway at the time of filing this report, the SC official said.
