A man and his wife were hacked to death allegedly by their son in their house in Anwara upazila of Chattogram today.

The deceased were identified as Swapan Das Gupta, 65, and his wife, Kalpana Das, 50, residents of the Purba Gujra area under Haildhar union, police said.

Police arrested the couple's only son, Romeo Das Gupta, 30, in connection with the incident.

Mahmudul Hasan, assistant superintendent of police (Anwara Circle), said Romeo had a history of drug abuse, which had been a source of conflict with his parents.

At around 1:00pm, Romeo allegedly hacked his mother and slit her throat, killing her on the spot. He then allegedly attacked his father in another room, the police officer said.

Hearing screams, local residents rushed to the house and rescued Swapan, but he died from his injuries on the way to the hospital.

After the killings, Romeo took a bath and sat quietly inside his room, where police later arrested him, the ASP said.

The bodies were sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Legal proceedings are underway, the police official added.
