We are deeply troubled by the dismissal of two teachers at the University of Asia Pacific following student protests. That the allegations -- that they disrespected religion and were sympathetic to the previous regime ruling party -- were enough to trigger demands for their removal, and which the university also swiftly accepted, sends an extremely dangerous precedent that does not bode well for the future of our nation.

Education institutions, but especially universities, are meant to be spaces of inquiry, debate, and dissent. If faculty members can be outright dismissed simply because students accuse them of political bias or religious disrespect, then what is the message that is being sent to all who work in academia? 

Investigating allegations thoroughly should certainly be the norm, and it must be done transparently and fairly. However, giving in to what appears to be yet another incident of mob mentality and acting in haste to appease such pressure groups is beyond disappointing.

The reputation of our higher education institutions is already in shambles, and our struggle with politicization and intolerance within these institutions have also been well documented. Allowing student protests to dictate faculty appointments and terminations only deepens this crisis. 

While religion and politics are certainly sensitive subjects, sensitivity cannot mean silencing. A university’s role is to foster critical thinking and not to punish it. If educators fear dismissal for expressing views, however unpopular, then the very purpose of education is undermined.

Teachers must be held accountable for misconduct, but accountability requires due process, not mob pressure. Otherwise, the classroom becomes hostage to whichever group can shout the loudest.

In the long run, the future health and progress of our nation depends on universities that defend inquiry, not suppress it. The dismissal of faculty members under pressure is certainly no victory -- it is a loss for our education itself.
