Tim Cook sent a final memo to Apple employees on August 31, 2026, the last day of his 15-year tenure as chief executive, passing leadership to John Ternus and framing the handover as a moment of enormous confidence rather than departure.

In the memo, reported by Bloomberg and published across news outlets, Cook told staff he was not leaving Apple but stepping away from a role he had loved deeply. He said he would miss the work "in ways I can only begin to imagine," while declaring himself completely at peace with his decision. "Few people understand what it takes to build products that change the world the way John does," Cook wrote of his successor.

The internal message offered a deliberate portrait of Ternus as a product builder with deep experience across the iPhone, Mac, AirPods, and other hardware lines, suggesting that Apple's next era will be defined by renewed emphasis on hardware and product execution. Under Ternus, the company recently shipped the ultra-thin iPhone Air, the lower-cost MacBook Neo, and AirPods with hearing health features.

Cook made no specific mention of AI, services, China policy, or the regulatory challenges ahead. He focused instead on Apple's culture, describing it as the company's most durable asset. "Culture triumphs over everything," he wrote. He also referenced Steve Jobs's concept of leaving a "dent in the universe," saying Apple makes that possible because of "who we are and what we believe."

Cook posted separately on X, writing: "My title changes tomorrow, but the love I have for the Apple community never will." He remains at Apple as executive chairman.
