Fans of "3 idiots" might finally get to see a sequel after 15 years. According to reports by Pinkvilla, fans might look forward to seeing Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi come together once again, with Rajkumar Hirani returning as director and Vidhu Vinod Chopra producing.

A source involved with the project shared that filming is expected to begin in the latter half of 2026. "The script is final, and the entire team is genuinely thrilled. They believe the sequel has recaptured the essence of the original — the same humour, heart and depth," the insider said.

According to the source, the narrative will pick up about 15 years after the characters parted ways in the climax of the first film, bringing them back together for a fresh adventure. Viewers can expect the familiar charm of Rancho, Farhan, Raju and Pia, along with new humour that reflects how their lives have matured over time.

Pinkvilla reports that Rajkumar Hirani, who had been considering a sequel for years, only returned to the idea recently after his Dadasaheb Phalke biopic was put on pause. "He then devoted his time to developing the 3 Idiots follow-up into a complete screenplay. Hirani always had the basic concept for '3 Idiots 2', but he wanted it to be flawless and worthy of the original film's legacy," the source explained.

When it hit theatres in 2009, "3 Idiots" quickly turned into a cult favourite and sparked nationwide conversations about the flaws in India's education system. The film also broke records, becoming the first Indian movie to cross the Rs 200-crore mark and raising the bar for Bollywood box office success.
