Mohammad Fakhrul Alam-written and directed short film titled Memories and Miseries has been selected in the Nepal International Film Festival 2026.

The film has been selected for the International Shorts Competition, fiction, category scheduled to be held in Kathmandu from April 2 to 6.

Memories and Miseries revolves around a soul revisiting three fragments of its existence— a solitary writer, a war-haunted priest and his soul being in the state of limbo— searching for meaning through spirituality, loneliness and the memories full of sufferings.

The film follows the introspective journey of a soul who is caught between divinity and the complications of human emotion.  Lying by the riverside, the soul revisits scattered periods of its life: one as a writer exploring the human condition and another as a priest scarred by war.

The film explores the interwoven threads of memory, fate and the eternal struggles between transcendence and suffering. Each life, a moment in the soul’s quest for meaning, leaves behind traces of joy, pain and redemption.

Fakhrul Alam has said that in creating and developing Memories and Miseries, he has attempted to explore the deeper, unspoken layers of human lives— the moments where memory and emotion collide, where the soul grapples with its purpose and its past.

‘Traveling for almost a decade throughout the country like a dervish, I had always longed for expressing stories I have lived through,’ he mentioned.

Harif Siraj, Khalid Hasan Rumi and Fakhrul Alam have played different roles in the film while Ariq Anam Khan leads the narration from background.
