Nearly two years after an image of Bangladeshi student Nusrat Jahan standing defiantly in front of a police prison van became one of the defining photographs of the July Uprising, a strikingly similar scene has emerged in Mumbai, India.

Nusrat’s photo was taken on July 31, 2024, during the “March for Justice” near the High Court Mazar Gate. She stood in front of a police vehicle after officers detained fellow protesters, creating an image that was later widely shared and came to symbolise the uprising.

The woman in the Mumbai image has been identified in reports by The Times of India, Hindustan Times and the Associated Press as Rhiya Ahir. She stood in front of a police vehicle during a protest supporting the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) movement on Wednesday after demonstrators were detained.

Images and videos of the incident have since spread widely across social media and news platforms.

Although the two photographs were taken in different countries and during separate protest movements, their visual resemblance has drawn significant attention online.
