A cattle trader was killed in an attack during a clash between two groups of traders at a cattle market in Savar, on the outskirts of Dhaka, early today.

The deceased was identified as Shahidullah Kaiser, 50, son of the late Matiar Rahman of Mangalbari area under Baishakanda Union in Dhamrai upazila of Dhaka. He was also a local medicine trader.

The incident took place at Paragram Cattle Market in Shimulia Union around 1:00am today, police said.

Firoz Kabir, who was present during the incident, said he and his maternal uncle, Shahidullah, went to the cattle market on May 21 to sell 18 cows and two goats. By early today, four cows remained unsold.

“Around 1:00am, while we were waiting to sell the remaining cattle, another trader tried to tie his cattle in the same spot, which led to an argument. Later, some market authority staff members and several traders attacked us. When my uncle Shahidullah tried to save me, they brutally assaulted him,” he alleged.

Firoz also claimed that during the attack, the assailants took Tk 40,000 from his younger uncle, Masud Rana.

Critically injured, Shahidullah was taken to Dhamrai Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead, Firoz added.

Confirming the incident, Dhamrai Police Station Sub-Inspector Kazi Rezaul said police recovered the body from the hospital after being informed of the incident, and legal procedures were underway.

He added that since the incident took place within the jurisdiction of Ashulia Police Station, the matter had been referred there for further action.
