The local administration in Pirojpur's Mathbaria upazila has seized a truck loaded with government primary and secondary school textbooks over allegations of irregularities.
The truck was seized from Uttar Mithakhali area of Mathbaria municipality around noon yesterday, although the incident came to light today.
According to witnesses, the textbooks were being loaded onto a truck under the supervision of M/S Hannan Enterprise. Suspecting irregularities, local residents informed the administration. Acting on the information, Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Sudipta Deb Nath went to the spot and seized the truck along with the books.
Confirming the seizure, Sudipta said the administration is investigating whether the books had been sold following proper procedures.
Mohammad Ullah, manager of M/S Hannan Enterprise, claimed that the books had been purchased from a hawker named Zakaria Hawlader.
However, Zakaria said he had bought 587kg of government textbooks and exercise books from a government high school in the upazila.
The seized truck has been kept in police custody.
"Legal action will be taken if anyone is found guilty after the investigation," the executive magistrate said.
