Finance and planning minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday said that his government would free the country’s economy from over-regulation.
‘Bangladesh economy has been overregulated,’ he said while talking to reporters at the secretariat in the capital Dhaka on his first day at office after taking oath as minister on Tuesday.
Level-playing field for all will be ensured as the managed economy can no longer be run, added the new finance minister who replaced finance adviser Salehuddin Ahmed of the interim government.
Lamenting over the ruination of different institutions during the past political regime under the Awami League, the finance and planning minister said that professionalism, transparency and efficiency were to be brought back to the institutions.
In the absence of professionalism, transparency and efficiency, whatever programme is taken, it will not deliver, he said.
Later, addressing the finance ministry officials, Amir Khasru asked bureaucrats to think out of box to live up to the expectation of the July-August mass uprising that ousted the authoritarian regime of Awami League on August 5, 2024.
The window of opportunity has to be utilised, said the finance and planning minister.
He said that the investment must have value addition and projects must have to be quality ones.
State minister for finance and planning Md Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki, who was present on the occasion, said that the country’s economic management would be run in the light of 31 points of prime minister Tarique Rahman.
He sought cooperation from all officials for the country’s economic progress.
