Expelled Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Ishaq Sarkar and several other people joined the National Citizen Party on Friday.
They joined the NCP at a programme organised by the NCP at the Institution of Diploma Engineers auditorium in the capital on Friday.
Others who joined the NCP include content creator Nuruzzaman Kafi, social activist Mohiuddin Rony, and Fersamin Haque Iqbal Flora, granddaughter of Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq.
NCP convener Nahid Islam, along with other central leaders of the party, welcomed the newcomers with flowers.
Ishaq Sarkar had long been involved in BNP politics and had previously served as the central organising secretary of both Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal.
During the Awami League regime, he was actively involved in BNP’s movements and protests and reportedly faced over 300 cases, said NCP leaders.
He, however, was later acquitted in most of the cases by the court after the fall of the Awami League regime amid a student-led mass uprising on August 5, 2024.
In the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections, Ishaq sought BNP nomination for the Dhaka-7 constituency. After failing to secure the nomination, he contested the election as an independent candidate and was subsequently expelled from the BNP for violating party discipline.
NCP convener Nahid Islam said that, ‘Ishaq Sarkar is an inspiration for us. He has set aside all opportunities and privileges and stood on the side of the people and the youth. Along with Ishaq Sarkar, many of his followers are also joining the NCP. We welcome them as well.’
