Police recovered the hanging body of a housewife from her house in Netrokona's Mohanganj upazila yesterday and arrested her husband in a case filed over alleged abetment of suicide.
The deceased was identified as Surma Akter, 28, of Manshri village in the upazila. She was the daughter of Sabuj Mia of Mendipur village in neighbouring Khaliajuri upazila, said police.
Her husband, Wasim Mia, 35, has been arrested in connection with a case filed over abetting suicide, said Sub-Inspector Md Jasim Uddin, investigating officer of the case.
According to police and locals, family members found Surma hanging from a ceiling beam with an orna (scarf) around her neck at her husband's house around 5:00pm on the day of Eid-ul-Azha. Police later recovered the body and sent it for autopsy.
The couple had been married for around 12 years and had two children -- a seven-year-old son and a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
Family members alleged that Surma had been subjected to physical and mental abuse by her husband over the years. They claimed that she took her own life after enduring repeated humiliation and mistreatment.
Yesterday night, Surma's brother Anis Mia filed a case with Mohanganj Police Station, accusing Wasim Mia and his two brothers of abetting suicide.
Police arrested Wasim shortly after the case was filed and produced him before a court this afternoon.
SI Jasim Uddin said the body was sent to Netrokona Modern Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Efforts are underway to arrest the other accused named in the case, he added.
