The repeated delay in upgrading the Hili land port highway, coupled with rising costs, is a reminder of a persistent challenge in Bangladesh’s development: Turning plans into timely, concrete results.

The many projects, planned or in motion, for the nation’s development are crucial, and we would do well to recognize that these delays also affect economic growth and public trust.

The Hili highway is a key trade route connecting markets and facilitating cross-border commerce. Its upgrade isn’t just about infrastructure but opening economic opportunities for local communities and the nation.

Delays often lead to higher expenses, changes in contractors, as well as the true objective of the project being lost with the passing of time. What should be a symbol of progress instead becomes a setback: In the form of lost productivity, and in the confidence toward development efforts.

To prevent this from becoming more commonplace than it already is, we must ensure that projects are made clear, that deadlines are enforced effectively, and that transparent progress reports are made accessible to the public.

Accountability is essential at every level; political will alone isn’t enough without strong project management and oversight.

Bangladesh’s development ambitions are strong, but they demand consistent follow-through. Citizens deserve to see plans realized on schedule and within budget. Delivering results can build trust and drive further progress.

Our projects will hold promise only if the execution is improved. Focused management and commitment to completion are vital in this regard.

Ensuring projects stay on track is not just good governance -- it is a necessity for Bangladesh’s continued growth and development.
