The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) on Friday began rationing petroleum fuel to ensure the availability of the key energy item for all types of consumers.

Under the new arrangement, motorcyclists and private car drivers will be allowed to purchase 2 litres and 10 litres of octane or petrol respectively per day.

Sport utility vehicles (SUVs), jeeps and microbuses will be allowed to buy 20 to 25 litres of octane or petrol, according to a press release issued by the BPC.

In the press release, the state-owned petroleum importer and distributor said pick-ups and local buses will be allowed to purchase 70 to 80 litres of diesel at a time, subject to the mandatory submission of the receipt from the previous purchase.

The amount of diesel will be 200 to 220 litres for long-haul buses, trucks, covered vans and container trucks, the release added.

Consumers have been asked to collect receipts from filling stations and present them during their next purchase as required by the BPC for receiving fuel.

The BPC has also directed filling stations to submit records of their fuel stocks and sales before collecting fresh consignments from oil depots.
