Blue Origin, an American astronautics company, has recently unveiled a prototype device designed with the help of AI to convert Moon dust into a usable energy source, at Amazon's re:Invent 2025 conference in Las Vegas, in collaboration with the startup Istari Digital.

The lunar device, described by Istari CEO Will Roper as a "moon vacuum," is intended to collect lunar dust and extract heat from it, effectively turning the Moon's surface material into a form of energy similar to a battery. This innovation could help spacecraft operate through the lunar night – a fortnight-long period of darkness and extreme cold that poses significant challenges for traditional power systems.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Roper explained that the AI platform used by Istari generates designs within a set framework of rules and parameters, preventing so-called "hallucinations" in the design process. Within these constraints, the AI can produce creative solutions that meet the technical requirements of the project, while engineers verify compliance with operational standards before deployment.

Istari Digital, which counts former Google CEO Eric Schmidt among its backers, is already engaged with the U.S. government and acts as a prime contractor with Lockheed Martin on the experimental x-56A unmanned aircraft.
