The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) today issued seven-point directives, including wearing masks and washing hands with soap and water, aimed at preventing the spread of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV).

The directives were signed by Professor Dr Md Halimur Rashid, line director of Communicable Disease Control Programof DGHS.

The other directives include covering nose and mouth with arm or a tissue while sneezing or coughing; disposing of used tissues immediately in a covered trash bin and washing hands with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer, avoiding contact with infected individuals and maintaining a distance of at least three feet, washing hands frequently with soap and water or hand sanitizer for at least 20 seconds, avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unclean hands, staying at home fully recovered if you face fever, cough, or breathing difficulties.

HMPV causes flu-like symptoms similar to other respiratory illnesses, which usually subside within 2–5 days. Therefore, there is no need for panic. Everyone is urged to adhere to health guidelines, according to the DGHS notice.

Like many other countries, Bangladesh experiences cases of this virus. To this end, health protocols must be reinforced at all healthcare facilities and points of entry, said the notice.

The DGHS has instructed all medical college hospitals, civil surgeons, district health supervisors, upazila health and family welfare officers, airport health officers, and port health officials across the country to take necessary measures against the HMPV virus.

According to the notice, the prevalence and severity of the HMPV virus have increased alarmingly in China and other countries in the subcontinent. Children under 14 years of age and individuals aged 65 and above are more susceptible to the virus. Those with chronic health conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.

DGHS also advised people to contact nearby hospitals if needed.
