LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that local government elections may begin in phases from September or October, after the current monsoon season.

In response to a query from Jamalpur-3 MP Mostafizur Rahman Babul during the question-and-answer session in parliament, the minister said the government plans to complete elections to union parishads, municipalities, upazila parishads, district councils and city corporations within the next year.

He noted that union parishad polls are likely to be held first.

The question-and-answer session was tabled by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.

“First, union parishad elections may be held. Then, step by step, other local government bodies will go to the polls. Elections to the newly formed Bogura City Corporation, along with 13 other city corporations, will also be completed within the same timeframe,” he said.

Replying to another question from ruling party MP Mohammad Shamim Kaisar, the minister added that the Local Government Division has already allocated Tk 6 lakh to each upazila parishad for constructing inspection rooms inside the complexes, intended for use by MPs and senior officials.
