Andrew Garfield stars as OpenAI chief Sam Altman in Luca Guadagnino's upcoming film "Artificial", portraying the tech executive at the centre of one of Silicon Valley's most dramatic corporate battles.

Garfield's Altman delivers a bleak vision of the future in the newly released trailer, declaring: “The future’s inevitable. Countries will fall. Industries are gonna collapse. And we get to be the ones to shepherd people into this new world,” The Guardian reported.

“Artificial” follows Altman's abrupt dismissal and subsequent reinstatement as OpenAI chief amid a bitter struggle over who would control the powerful technology developed by the company.

But Garfield has said he approached the role without any personal knowledge of Altman. “I don’t know Sam Altman. I’ve never met him,” he recently told Esquire.

“I think anyone who takes on that level of responsibility for a company or a technology that is going to do a hell of a lot of damage to the soul of humanity [must have] a certain ability to dissociate.”

The film also features actors portraying OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever and Elon Musk, alongside Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Chris O'Dowd, Zosia Mamet, Cooper Koch and Billie Lourd.

“Artificial” will premiere at the New York Film Festival in October before opening in US cinemas on Dec 25, reports The Guardian.

Neon acquired the project after Amazon MGM Studios dropped it in June.

The film reunites Garfield with director Guadagnino for a story that places one of Hollywood's leading actors at the heart of the global debate over artificial intelligence and the people shaping its future.
