Police have taken two alleged members of extremist group Dawlatul Islam into custody for interrogation after detonators were recovered in Dhaka’s Demra.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam on Monday granted three days’ remand for Jewel Bhuiyan, also known as Ustad, and two days for Md Arif Chowdhury.

In its plea, police said the suspects had “admitted” during initial questioning to being members of Dawlatul Islam.

They allegedly gathered in Demra to plan terrorist activities aimed at disrupting public safety and destabilising Bangladesh.

Prosecution Sub-Inspector Mohin Uddin said Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) SI Md Rafiqul Islam, the investigating officer, had sought 10 days’ remand. No lawyer represented the suspects during the hearing.

Police recovered two black-tape-wrapped bomb-like objects in Sarulia, Demra, on Sunday and identified them as detonators. A bomb disposal unit later neutralised them.

The two men were arrested at the scene. Police also recovered mobile phones, a gas lighter and other evidence.

ATU SI Palash Ali filed a case at Demra Police Station over the incident on Sunday.

In the remand plea, the investigating officer said Jewel was arrested during the operation, while Arif was caught about 9m away after attempting to flee.

Police said the remand was needed to uncover details of the alleged plot, identify others involved and determine whether further acts of sabotage had been planned.
