Three children, including two of a family, drowned while bathing in a pond in Monohardi upazila of Narsingdi on Saturday.

The incident occurred at around 3:30pm at Char Ahmadpur village in Khidirpur union.

The deceased are Fatema, 8, and her cousin Ayesha alias Ashamoni, 12, of Monohardi, and their relative Sumaiya, 13, of Mymensingh, said Monohardi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Jahangir Badsha.

According to locals, they went to bathe in a pond next to Fatema and Ayesha’s house in the afternoon.

After noticing that the three children had not resurfaced from the water for a long time, another child from the family alerted the victims' relatives.

Family members and locals searched the pond and recovered the bodies. Although efforts were made to take them to a hospital, they had already died.

The OC said, “This is an extremely tragic and heartbreaking incident. We will discuss the matter with our higher authorities and take the necessary steps."
