Four accused were produced before the court today to record their confessional statements under Section 164 at Cognisance Court-6, while another accused was placed on a three-day remand in connection with the murder case of customs officer Bullet Bairagi in Cumilla.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Abida Sultana Moli of Cognisance Court-6 received confessional statements of four accused, and issued three days’ remand for the other accused, Ismail Hossain Jony, said investigating officer Titu Kumer Nath of Cumilla Sadar South Police.
Imran Hossain Hridoy, 37; Mohammad Sohag, 30; Mohammad Sujon, 32; and Rahatul Rahman Jewel, 27, recorded their statements before the magistrate.
Earlier in the day, MZM Entekhab Chowdhury, director of Rapid Action Battalion’s (Rab) Legal and Media Wing, said Bullet Bairagi was killed by an organised mugging gang that lured him into a trap by posing as passengers.
The information was disclosed during a press briefing held at the Rab Media Centre in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar this noon after arresting the five accused.
According to Rab, the gang targeted the victim after he got off a bus at midnight in the Jhagurjhuli area of Cumilla and later assaulted him before throwing him from a moving CNG-run auto-rickshaw, causing his death on the spot.
According to the elite force, the victim went missing on April 24 while returning to Cumilla from Chattogram after a training programme.
At around 8:45 am on April 25, his body was recovered from beside a hotel in the Kotbari area on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway by Mainamati Highway Police. His body had multiple injury marks.
Bullet Bairagi served as an assistant revenue officer at the Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate in Cumilla’s Bibir Bazar Land Port.
A murder case was filed with Cumilla Sadar South Model Police Station by the victim’s mother, Nilima Bairagi, against unidentified individuals.
