A house help was allegedly beaten on Wednesday by her employers, assistant sub-inspectors of Sonadanga Model police station in Khulna, Sanjay Mitra and Popy Mitra.

The incident took place in the Sonadanga residential area on Wednesday afternoon, and when the matter came to light through locals, the police rescued the house help.

Sonadanga Model police station officer-in-charge Md Rafiqul Islam said that the 20-year-old victim had been living in the house of the police officer couple for a long time.

‘The accused are in police custody now. Filing a case over the incident is under way. Necessary legal action will be taken after a case is lodged,’ he added.

The abuse came to light after a human rights activist captured video evidence showing a glimpse of the torture through the kitchen window on a mobile phone.

The activist subsequently alerted authorities by calling the emergency helpline, 999.

According to media reports, the victim suffered severe burn injuries allegedly inflicted with heated kitchen utensils as punishment for dropping food.

The incident sparked outrage among locals, who demanded immediate legal action and exemplary punishment for the couple.
