Leaders of some left political parties on Thursday at a protest rally in the capital Dhaka called on the interim government to refrain from leasing out the management of Chattogram port’s New Mooring Container Terminal to a foreign company.
The Ganatantrik Jukta Front and the Antifascism Left Alliance jointly organised the rally in front of the National Press Club, protesting against the interim government’s move to lease out the management of the terminal to DP World, a United Arab Emirates-based company.
Chairing the rally, Ganatantrik Jukta Front coordinator Bazlur Rashid Firoz, also general secretary of the Socialist Party of Bangladesh, said that leasing out the management of the profitable terminal would go against the national interests.
He called on the government to refrain from leasing out the terminal to a foreign operator.
Ganatantrik Jukta Front leaders Sazzad Zahir Chandan, Abdus Satter and Mushtuque Husain and Antifascism Left Alliance leaders Subhrangshu Chakrobartty and Mahinuddin Chowdhury Liton, among others, spoke at the rally.
The rally was followed by a procession that paraded different city roads.
