In the process of running a state, people and their opinions play a central role.

Democracy rests on public participation, and voting remains the most direct and effective way for citizens to shape political outcomes.

Through the ballot, people express their views, assert their rights, and influence the direction of governance.

For that reason, voting is not merely a procedural act -- it is a responsibility that demands awareness, judgment and intent.

Many voters say the importance of a single vote is often underestimated. A voter from Dhaka-13 said the belief that one vote does not matter weakens democratic participation.

“Some people think that if one person does not vote, it makes no difference,” he said.

“But elections will take place anyway, and someone will be elected. The real question is whether that person will work for the country and protect public interests. That uncertainty makes voting a social responsibility, not just a personal choice. It’s not enough to vote myself; encouraging others to participate is also important.”

As Bangladesh moves through another critical electoral moment, the role of young voters -- particularly first-time voters -- has become increasingly significant.

Young people make up a large segment of the electorate, and their engagement has the potential to influence political culture and leadership trends in the years ahead.

Analysts say that informed participation by young voters strengthens democratic institutions and promotes accountability.

For many first-time voters, the challenge lies not in the willingness to vote but in choosing whom to support.

Sakil Hossen, a young voter from Bhola-3, said he was unable to vote in the previous election but is determined to participate this time. However, he is still evaluating his options.

“I have not yet found my preferred candidate,” he said.

“I want someone who is socially acceptable, who works for both the people and the country, who does not support corruption or misuse public funds, and who is committed to building a drug-free society. I will vote for the candidate, not the electoral symbol.”

His remarks reflect a broader shift among voters, especially younger ones, away from traditional loyalties and toward candidate-based evaluation.

This trend places greater emphasis on personal integrity, past conduct and policy positions rather than party identity alone.

Experts say this approach aligns with the core principles of democratic participation.

Understanding candidates before casting a vote, they argue, is essential.

Voters should examine candidates’ backgrounds, previous performance, political positions and sense of responsibility toward society.

While information about candidates is now widely available through online platforms, analysts caution against relying solely on campaign promises.

Promises, they say, are easy to make but difficult to fulfil without competence, experience and clear planning.

Social researcher Aminul Islam said the real value of voting lies in electing capable and public-oriented representatives.

“Voting is a civic duty in a democratic process,” he said.

“But supporting an unqualified or unsuitable candidate can be more harmful than not voting at all. Conscious choice is what gives voting its meaning.”

Political analysts also point out that voter responsibility does not end at the ballot box.

A healthy democracy depends on citizens who remain engaged, question authority, and hold elected representatives accountable for their actions once in office.

Choosing the right individuals and political parties plays a decisive role in shaping state policies and institutions.

At the same time, sustained, informed participation by citizens is essential to ensure that democratic processes lead to effective governance rather than symbolic outcomes.

As voters prepare to cast their ballots, many see the act not just as a right, but as a shared obligation -- one that carries long-term consequences for governance, public trust and the future of the state.
